A master's job is
never done, it lives on through the ages.
The Annual Installation of Officers was held on December 16, 1978 and Maida Carpenter PM acted as Installing Organist and rendered several numbers during the Installation on the Organ. It is also worth noting that after serving 43 consecutive years as Secretary, Bro. Howison was installed as Organist. Light refreshments were served in the dining hall after the ceremonies.
At the stated meeting in January, Bro. C. Sam Johnson PM reported on a "Hiram Award" ceremony he had witnessed at Sanger Lodge and reported what a wonderful way it was to recognize brother's who were really making a difference in the Lodge by their actions.
At a third degree on January 25th of Bro. C. L. Harrigan III, his real life brother, Loren Harrigan, played third ruffian. I guess that taught him that he should have been nice to his brother when they were small...hehehe
On January 26th, the Grand Lodge of California opened lodge in Clovis Lodge for the purpose of laying a cornerstone at the new Miramonte Elementary School.
In February it was decided by motion and vote to discontinue the Fresno Bee ad displaying the times and places of the meetings of Clovis Lodge. Also at the third degree of Bro. Tommy Lynn Carroll on the 22nd there were 187 people present, 109 members and 78 visitors. Now this leads me to believe that either Bro. Carroll was a very popular guy or people couldn't believe he had advanced that far- one or the other...:) hehehe
It was announced that the month of April would be western dress month. It is still the same way today. Also it was decided to look into a Temple Committee to try and lessen the load of the Master! Now that was smart thinking... hehehe
On March 29th, Bro. Howison donated a picture of Bro. George Washington to the Lodge. He had received it as a gift and the picture was dated 1856. In April a brother of Clovis Lodge was ordered expelled for unmasonic conduct after the results were read by the trial master.
In June it was decided by motion and vote to have a Trustee Building Committee to be appointed by the Master of the Lodge. In July is was acknowledged by letter that Bro's. Myron W. Glenn and John Robert Hunter had received their 50 year pins at home and Bro's. Paul C. Gitchell, Milton J. Blakeley, Earl B. Jackson and Claude C. Scullin had received their pins in different ceremonies close to there respective homes.
On July 26th Bro. George Edward Talbert, Past Master of Clovis Lodge, passed away in Fresno. Bro. Talbert had long been a very active member and will be missed by Clovis Lodge for his many years of precious service.
It is also worth noting that Clovis Lodge continued to make new Master Mason's at a regular pace, not slowing down on degree work at all.
Brothers lost to death in this year were Jesse Edward Bigelow, Delmar Amos Deeter, Glen William Reyburn, John D, Orndoff, Orthel Thomas Bobo, Grover Cleveland Light, Clayton Howard Murray, George Edward Talbert PM, Norman R. Lambert, Stanley C. Nelson, Albert James Lauder, John McPherson Macnicol, James Willard Vineyard, Garland Conner Owen and Gordon Edwin McPhail.
